Art and power have always been associated together.
In
fact, art has the power to move people and affect them.
In the
case of music, a type of art that have been practiced for a very
long time, affected the lives of many people.
What power does
music have on us? Music which in general is made through
various emotions will affect the listener emotionally and change
his (/her) mood, as well as have an effect on his stress, without
forgetting music’s role regarding one’s health.
First things first, music has the power to change one’s mood
and emotions but also regulate them.
In fact, listening to music
affects our emotions and helps us process them by intensifying
what we feel and letting us understand it.
For example, during
wars, music played on the battlefield, helped soldiers face their
fear, replacing their scared and sad mood with courage and will
to fight.
Moreover, music therapy is a way to change our
emotions by listening to three, musical pieces in this order: a
piece that describes the mood felt, a piece that doesn’t mean
emotionally anything to the person, and finally a piece that
relates the mood we want to be in.
So, music has the capacity to
change one’s mood and helps him process it.
Secondly, music has the ability to reduce our stress and
calm us.
In general, a slower tempo can quiet our mind and relax
our muscles while releasing the stress of the situation we are in.
For instance, a lot of surgeons listen to music while doing a
surgery to stay calm and focused or, if the patient is awake
during the operation, he listens to music or sings with the
surgeon.
This shows the power of music to help us work better
Lastly, music affects our brain, physical health and can be a
solution to some disease.
A lot of studies showed that music
prevents memory loss and helps us study better.
For example,
the study where researchers gave to a group of people tasks that
required them to read and recall short lists of words.
Those who
were listening to music outperformed those who worked in silence
or with white noise.
Furthermore, listening to music can help us
maintain our neurons (brain cells), prolong their life and in a few
cases enhance or restore them according to studies.
Therefore,
music has been shown being able to prevent or help cure brain
disease such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.
So, music has
a power towards the health of an individual.
To sum up, music has the power to affect or heal our
emotions and mental state as well as our physical one.
By
improving our mood, our stress, and our health, music helps us.
